A well-reported case of insurance scam ends up with the conviction of Anne Darwin, 56, of fraud. She was considered guilty of six counts of fraud and other nine counts of money laundering, as she helped his husband John Darwin, 57, to stage his own death in 2002 as means to collect pension and insurance payments. Although both partners are yet to be sentenced, John Darwin was pleaded guilty in last March to deception and fraud.
Staging John's death in a canoe accident, the couple kept the truth even from their family, including two adult sons. He was declared dead in 2003, one year after he was reported missing. The couple's plan was to collect money to start a new life in Panama. Strangely, John Darwin entered a police station in London last December, claiming to have amnesia. Further investigations started to unfold the couple's scam which would result in nearly US $500.000 of insurance payments. The wife however, claims now to have been coerced into the scheme.
